HISTORY:
Artefact: Dumbarton Oaks tablet (Mayan tablet from Palenque, Mexico)
Current Location: Washington DC, Dumbarton Oaks
Full name: K’inich Janaab Pakal
Reign of Pakal: July 615 – August 683
Despite the long reign and high status Pakal held, he began his rule as an unlikely and underestimated leader.
He ascended the throne at only 12 years old in a city ruined by war.
The young king inherited a kingdom in a state of anarchy, profoundly scarred by war and its recent humiliating military defeats.
Given such circumstances and great responsibilities at such a young age, he was faced with critics from the outset, but the young Pakal proved himself a worthy ruler.
During his reign his city rose from its ashes and began to spread across the mayan world.
The king lived to a remarkable 80 years of age and ruled for 68 years, one of the longest reigns not just in ancient mayan era but in the entire human history.
