HISTORY:
There are three important concepts that are associated with the mayan serpent:
– the serpent is the conduit and bearer of water,
– the serpent’s mouth opens to a supernatural portal,
– the sky is a giant serpent.
One of the most dominant themes, associated with mayan culture, is the symbol of serpents as supernatural beings.
Multiple lintels show the ritual process of bloodletting that culminates with the burning of bloodstained paper and summoning of the vision serpent.
This same image appears on many mayan ceramic vessels, showing supernatural individuals sprouting from the mouths of serpents.
